Nikah (marriage) is a sacred social contract between bride and groom and is strongly encouraged in Islam. It is declared to be one half of a Muslim’s faith. In another narration the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has been reported to have said: Do not delay in three things: 1) The offering of the obligatory prayer 2) The offering of the funeral prayer when the deceased’s body is present 3) The marriage of a woman when her suitable match is found.

What is a Nikah

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The Nikah is from my Sunnah (tradition),” making it an act of worship when performed with the correct intention, and a source of reward. Additionally, Allah states in the Qur’an, addressing the Prophet: “We certainly sent before you many Messengers, and We granted them spouses and offspring.” (Quran: 13:38). This shows that Nikah is not only part of the Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet but was also practiced by the Prophets who came before him.

Fee Structure

In-house (Masjid): £250 Outcall (Home/Wedding Venue): £300. Additional charges may apply for venues outside the M25.The fees cover the Nikkah service and certificate. A full receipt will be provided for payments. Note: Bookings are confirmed only upon receipt of payment.

Surrey Jamia Mosque Al Mustafa provides a Nikkah certificate but is not registered to solemnise marriages under English law. Consequently, a Nikkah performed in the UK does not constitute a legally recognised marriage and does not confer legal marital rights. It is crucial for couples to have a civil marriage conducted at a register office in accordance with English law, either immediately before or after the Nikkah ceremony, to ensure enforceable legal rights for both parties in cases of marriage breakdown or death.

Civil Ceremonies

A Nikah confirms your Islamic Marriage, however, to have your marriage legally recognised in the UK, you must undertake a Civil Ceremony.

Surrey Mosque is an authorised centre for the solemnisation of Civil Marriages. Uniquely, we have our own in-house civil registrars, allowing couples to complete both their Nikah and Civil Marriage ceremonies at the same time.

You will need to obtain the necessary paperwork from your local registry office before we can undertake the Civil Ceremony, which usually takes 4-6 weeks.

To enable Surrey Mosque to solemnise your Civil Marriage , you are required to give notice of your intention to marry, both of you must attend, in person, to the Superintendent Registrar of the Registration District in which you each live.It is crucial for couples to have a civil marriage conducted at a register office in accordance with English law, either immediately before or after the Nikkah ceremony, to ensure enforceable legal rights for both parties in cases of marriage breakdown or death.

Can we hold the Nikah ceremony outside of regular mosque hours?

Nikah ceremonies are typically held during regular mosque hours. However, special arrangements may be made with prior approval from the mosque administration.

What language will the Nikah be conducted in?

The Nikah ceremony at Surrey Masjid is typically conducted in English, though Arabic phrases may be included, particularly for the marriage contract.

Can we have a Nikah ceremony with family and friends in attendance?

Yes, you are welcome to invite family and friends to the Nikah ceremony. The Masjid can accommodate up to 100 guests

What is the role of the Imam during the Nikah?

The Imam will perform the official marriage contract (Nikah) by ensuring the offer and acceptance are made clearly between the bride and groom. He will also offer a short sermon (khutbah) and explain the responsibilities of marriage in Islam.

Can a Nikah be held at Surrey Masjid if one or both parties are not Muslim?

A Nikah is normally performed between a Muslim man and a Muslim woman. Please contact the Masjid and further guidance can be provided if one party is not a Muslim.

How much does the Nikah service cost?

The fee for the room booking and Nikah service at Surrey Masjid is £250 for out of area is £350. This fee covers the administrative costs, the presence of an Imam to conduct the ceremony, and the use of the Masjid space. Any donations to the Masjid are welcome but not required.

When do we have to make payment?

A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking. The balance must be paid 14 days before the ceremony is due to take place. If payments are not received in line with these dates, we cannot ensure your service will take place as scheduled.
